About May I Take Your Order

May I Take Your Order is a short horror visual novel that treats a single restaurant shift like a first date from another dimension. You play a brand-new waiter working a hectic Saturday night, and one of your tables is a well-mannered gentleman sitting alone with a cup of coffee, waiting for his girlfriend to arrive. He seems perfectly pleasant. She is something else entirely.

What follows is a darkly funny, blood-spattered romance seen from the worst possible vantage point: yours. The couple, Hendrik and Talaiporia, are devoted to each other in a way that bends the rules of reality, and it falls to you to keep service running while trying not to look too closely at the guest at table six. The game commits to both halves of that pitch. The romance is played sincerely, the horror is played without flinching, and the comedy lives in the space between them, which is exactly why the combination works.

A playthrough takes about half an hour, and there are five endings to find, which makes it an easy one to replay. You can play May I Take Your Order online here for free, right in your browser.

How to Play May I Take Your Order

  • Click or tap to advance the dialogue at your own pace.
  • Make a choice whenever options appear. Your decisions as a waiter shape where the night goes.
  • Pay attention to what your guests ask for, since even small requests can matter.
  • Read through to the end of the shift to reach one of the five endings.
  • Start again and choose differently to uncover the endings you missed.

What Makes May I Take Your Order Scary

May I Take Your Order mixes romance, comedy, and cosmic horror into something genuinely hard to predict. The fear comes from the gulf between how politely everyone behaves and how horrifying things become. Hendrik is courteous and thrilled to see his date, the dining room is spotless, and none of that stops the evening from sliding into the grotesque. Talaiporia is the kind of presence the eye struggles to accept.

The humor keeps it from turning grim, but the gore is real and the Lovecraftian side is played straight. The creator frames the violence as fun gore and includes a separate content warnings document with the downloadable version for anyone who wants the details before starting. Contains gore and grotesque monster imagery.

Tips for May I Take Your Order

  • Take your time. The jokes and the dread both land better when you read slowly.
  • Choose boldly on your first run. There are five endings, so an odd outcome is just one of them.
  • Replay with different decisions to work through the rest of the endings.
  • If the browser version feels sluggish, the creator notes that the downloadable version runs more smoothly.
  • If you are sensitive to gore, read the creator's content warnings before you begin.

FAQ

Is May I Take Your Order free?

Yes. May I Take Your Order is free to play in your browser on this page, with no account, no download, and nothing to buy inside the game. AlexisRoyce also offers downloadable versions for Windows, macOS, and Linux on itch.io, which the creator says run more smoothly, but the browser version is enough to start your shift.

Is May I Take Your Order scary?

It is more darkly funny and gruesome than frightening. May I Take Your Order pairs a sweet, oddly polite monster romance with cosmic horror and some real gore, so the unease comes from how calmly everyone reacts to things that should not be happening. If you are squeamish, check the creator's content warnings before you play.

How long is May I Take Your Order?

About half an hour per playthrough, according to its creator. May I Take Your Order has five endings, so seeing everything takes longer, since each run lets you make different choices during the shift. It is short enough to finish in one sitting and compact enough that replaying for the other endings feels natural.

Who made May I Take Your Order?

May I Take Your Order was created by AlexisRoyce, an independent developer, using the Ren'Py visual novel engine. It was released on itch.io, and its couple, Hendrik and Talaiporia, also appear in the creator's NonPlatonic Forms teaser demo. FunClicker did not make the game; we embed the creator's own browser build with credit.

Can I play May I Take Your Order on mobile or a Chromebook?

Usually. It is a visual novel, so you mostly click or tap to advance text and pick options, which can work on a Chromebook or a touchscreen. The creator notes that the downloadable version runs more smoothly than the browser one, so expect some lag on slower devices. A computer gives the most comfortable experience.

Is May I Take Your Order unblocked at school?

It runs in an ordinary browser tab with no download or login, so nothing on our side blocks it. Whether May I Take Your Order loads on a school or library network depends on that network's filter. It contains gore and grotesque monster imagery, so think about where you are playing before you start.

Does May I Take Your Order have jump scares?

May I Take Your Order is a visual novel, so there are no chases or timed shocks to react to. Its horror comes through the writing, the artwork, and situations that keep escalating, all with a heavy dose of dark comedy. There are gory and grotesque moments, but the experience is about reading and choosing rather than being startled.

How many endings does May I Take Your Order have?

Five. May I Take Your Order branches based on the choices you make during your shift, and each ending wraps up the night in its own way. A single run takes about half an hour, so seeing them all means several visits to the restaurant. Change key decisions on each replay to reach the ones you missed.
