About Connect 4

Connect 4 is the classic four-in-a-row strategy game, free in your browser. Drop discs into a 7×6 grid and be the first to line up four of your color — across, down, or diagonally. Play against the computer at three difficulty levels, from a casual Easy to a Hard AI that plans several moves ahead, or pass the device for a two-player match. Your win-loss record saves for every mode. No signup, no download.

How to Play

  • Pick your mode: vs Computer (Easy, Medium, or Hard) or 2 Players on one device.
  • Click or tap a column to drop your disc — it falls to the lowest open slot.
  • On desktop you can also use the arrow keys to aim and space to drop.
  • Connect four of your discs in a row — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — before your opponent does.
  • If the board fills with no line of four, the game is a draw. Rematch is one tap.

Tips & Strategy

  • Take the center column when you can. More possible four-in-a-rows pass through the middle than anywhere else.
  • Never ignore three in a row — block it immediately, or the game is over next turn.
  • Build double threats: two ways to win at once can't both be blocked. That's how you beat the Hard AI.
  • Watch the diagonals. Most losses come from a diagonal you never saw forming.
  • Think one row ahead: sometimes blocking or winning requires the disc below the key square to exist first — don't hand your opponent that setup disc.

The Connect 4 Family

The four-in-a-row family goes back centuries, but the modern board game was published by Milton Bradley in 1974 and has been a household staple ever since. Computer scientists solved it in 1988: with perfect play, the first player wins by starting in the center column. Online, the cluster spans connect four, four in a row, 4 in a row, two-player connect 4, and connect 4 vs computer across sites like Papergames, CoolmathGames, and Math Playground. Connect 4 on FunClicker gives you both sides of it — a real minimax AI with three difficulty settings, and pass-and-play for settling it in person.

FAQ

How do you win Connect 4?

Line up four of your discs in a row before your opponent — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Strong play means controlling the center column, blocking every three-in-a-row immediately, and building two threats at once so your opponent can't block both.

Is Connect 4 solved?

Yes. In 1988, researchers proved that with perfect play the first player always wins by opening in the center column. Openings in the columns next to center draw, and openings further out actually lose against perfect play. Humans don't play perfectly, though — which is what keeps it fun.

What is the best first move in Connect 4?

The center column. It's the only opening move that wins with perfect play, because more potential lines of four pass through the center than through any other column. If you can't take the center, the columns beside it are the next best.

Is Connect 4 luck or skill?

Pure skill. There are no dice, cards, or hidden information — both players see everything. The better strategist wins, which is why practicing against a strong computer opponent genuinely improves your game.

How many discs do you get in Connect 4?

The 7×6 board holds 42 discs, so each player gets 21. If all 42 are placed without a four-in-a-row, the game is a draw.

Is Connect 4 the same as four in a row?

Same game. Connect 4 is the famous board-game name; four in a row (or 4 in a row) is the generic name for the mechanic. Captain's Mistress is an older traditional name for the same idea.

Can I play Connect 4 against the computer?

Yes. Connect 4 on FunClicker has three AI levels. Easy makes casual moves, Medium looks a few moves ahead, and Hard searches deep enough to punish almost any mistake — beating it usually takes a genuine double threat.

Can two people play on one device?

Yes. Pick 2 Players mode and pass the mouse or phone between turns. The game tracks whose turn it is, detects the win or draw, and keeps a running record for the session.

Is Connect 4 good for kids?

Very. It teaches planning, pattern recognition, and thinking about an opponent's intentions, with rules a 5-year-old can learn in one game. The Easy computer level is a friendly starting point before moving up.

Is Connect 4 free on FunClicker?

Yes — completely free, no signup, no download. It runs in any browser on desktop, phone, tablet, or Chromebook, and it's unblocked on school networks.
