About Pencil Peril

Pencil Peril is a platformer for two people, set inside a notebook. One player steers the character, who has to get across the map to the treasure. The other player steers the map itself, because that player is furious about never winning a trophy.

That split is the whole hook. One side is a runner, the other is a saboteur, and the back and forth between them drives every round.

You can play Pencil Peril online in a browser tab. A session takes about half an hour, and a second player on the same computer is the intended way to play.

How to Play Pencil Peril

  • Decide who plays the character and who controls the map.
  • The character player crosses the map in search of the treasure.
  • The map player changes the map to get in the way, or to help.
  • Click inside the game window first, then try the keyboard to find which keys each player uses.
  • Swap roles after a round so both of you try each side.

What to Expect in Pencil Peril

Expect a game that works best with two people sitting together. One of you is trying to get across, the other is trying to stop you, and that shifts the mood from solo platforming into a friendly rivalry.

The notebook setting gives it a playful, hand-drawn feel. It's a jam game built around one clever idea, so keep rounds short and swap often. A sequel, Pencil Peril 2, is there if you want more afterward.

Pencil Peril free in the browser is the kind of thing you pull up with a friend on a lazy afternoon. Pass the keyboard, take turns, and see who prefers the runner and who prefers the saboteur.

Tips for Pencil Peril

  • Swap roles every round so nobody gets stuck as the map player.
  • Decide who is who before you start, so the first round does not turn into an argument.
  • As the map player, time your changes. A well-timed one beats a constant one.
  • As the character, keep moving toward the treasure and do not stall.
  • Try the sequel if you want more of the idea.

Who Made Pencil Peril

Pencil Peril was made by Parrudo Productions and released on itch.io. It was made in Unity: Carlos Lennon on game design, Lukas de Paiva on animation, Maurício Ramalho on sound and music, and Wesley Ronald on programming, for a local game jam in 2018. FunClicker embeds the creator's own version so you can play it here without downloading anything. We did not make the game, and the credit for its design, code, and art belongs to its creator. You can find the original on the Pencil Peril page on itch.io.

FAQ

Is Pencil Peril free?

Pencil Peril is free. Press Play above and you're in.

How do you play Pencil Peril?

One player controls the character, who crosses the map in search of the treasure. The other controls the map itself. Click inside the game window first and try the keyboard to find each player's keys. Swap roles after a round so both of you get a turn.

What is the goal of Pencil Peril?

The character player wants to get across and reach the treasure. The map player wants to stand in the way, since they're furious about not winning a trophy. So the goals clash, which is where the game's tension comes from.

Can I play Pencil Peril alone?

Yes, there's a single-player option, but it's built around two roles, so it plays best with a friend on the same computer. Open it up and try it solo if you like, then pass the keyboard for the proper version.

Who made Pencil Peril?

Parrudo Productions is the creator of Pencil Peril. We play the original itch.io build here and credit it on this page.

Can I play Pencil Peril on a Chromebook or phone?

A Chromebook or laptop is the best fit, since two players can share the keyboard. A phone is a poor match for a two-player platformer that needs separate controls for each side, so use a computer if you plan to play with a friend.

Is Pencil Peril unblocked at school?

If your school's filter allows FunClicker, Pencil Peril unblocked runs right in the tab. Filters differ from one network to the next, so it's worth a quick try.

Is there a Pencil Peril 2?

Yes. A sequel called Pencil Peril 2 exists, from the same studio, if you want more of the notebook platforming. Play the original first, then try the sequel to see how the idea grows once you know the two roles well.
