About Crusty Proto

Crusty Proto is a retro survival horror game dressed up as a lost artifact: an unfinished, bug-ridden prototype supposedly dated to around 1997 and dug out of a stack of discs bought at a garage sale. It is trying very hard to be the big zombie game of its era, and it is not quite managing. That gap is the whole point.

The setup is classic late-90s fare. A new drug has gone wrong, a city has filled with zombies, and your character is on the run from the outbreak. You search for keys and notes, scrounge for items like fuel and repair tools, and shoot what gets in your way with a pistol that never has quite enough ammo. Along the way the game falls apart in deliberate, carefully staged ways.

That is what makes the Crusty Proto game special. Headless zombies, broken geometry and strangely animated characters are not accidents here; they are the jokes. It is a loving parody of PlayStation-era horror that still keeps enough tension to make you check your ammo twice. Because it was built during a short game jam, it is also compact, so you can see the whole outbreak through in one session.

How to Play Crusty Proto

  • Walk with WASD or the arrow keys, and hold Shift to run.
  • Hold Space to raise and aim your pistol.
  • Press E to interact with objects, or to fire while you are aiming.
  • An Xbox controller works too: left stick to walk, X to run, A to interact or shoot, and a trigger to aim.
  • Search rooms for keys, notes and useful items, then use them to open the way forward.
  • Manage your ammo. Not every zombie needs to be fought.

What Makes Crusty Proto Scary

Crusty Proto borrows the dread of early 3D horror: stiff movement, limited visibility, fixed resources and enemies that shamble toward you faster than you would like. Even played for laughs, that combination still creates a squeeze. Running low on bullets in a hallway with a zombie in it is tense no matter how silly the zombie looks. The limited supplies force the same hard choices the originals did: fight, run or save the shot for something worse.

The glitch aesthetic adds a stranger layer. A game that is visibly breaking down makes you unsure what is a bug, what is a joke and what is about to go wrong. Mostly, though, this PS1 horror game wants you grinning. Contains zombie violence, presented with deliberately crude low-poly graphics.

Tips for Crusty Proto

  • Read every note you pick up. They carry most of the story and point you toward what to do next.
  • Aim before you fire. Wasted shots are hard to replace.
  • Run past enemies when you can instead of stopping to fight each one.
  • Check corners and dead ends for items. Fuel and tools are easy to miss.
  • If something looks broken, it is probably on purpose. Enjoy the show.
  • Plug in a controller if you have one. The game supports Xbox-style pads, which suit its retro movement.

Who Made Crusty Proto

Crusty Proto was made by 3DI70R, who handled the coding, modeling and animation, with music, ideas and testing from Tihan. The pair built it for ShroomJam 2024, making every asset during the jam itself, and released it on itch.io in browser and Windows versions. FunClicker embeds the creator's own browser build, so what you play here is the official release: 3DI70R on itch.io.

FAQ

Is Crusty Proto free?

Yes. Crusty Proto is free to play online in your browser, with no download, no account and no purchases. This page embeds the creator's official browser build from itch.io. If you prefer, there is also a Windows version on the developer's page, but the browser release plays fine for a quick run through the outbreak.

Is Crusty Proto scary?

A little, but it is mostly funny. Crusty Proto uses the tension of classic survival horror, with zombies, scarce ammo and cramped rooms, then deliberately breaks itself with glitches and odd animation. You will get a few tense moments when bullets run low, but the headless zombies and broken graphics are there to make you laugh.

How do you play Crusty Proto?

Move with WASD or the arrow keys and hold Shift to run. Hold Space to aim your pistol, and press E to interact with objects or to fire while aiming. Explore the area, collect keys, notes and items like fuel or repair tools, and use them to progress while dealing with zombies.

Who made Crusty Proto?

Crusty Proto was created by 3DI70R, who did the coding, modeling and animation, together with Tihan, who contributed music, ideas and quality testing. It was made for ShroomJam 2024 and released on itch.io. FunClicker did not make Crusty Proto; we embed the developer's official build and credit them here.

Can I play Crusty Proto on mobile or Chromebook?

Crusty Proto needs a keyboard or a controller, so it is not suited to phones or tablets. A Chromebook with a keyboard works, and the game also supports an Xbox-style controller if you have one connected. The retro graphics are light, so it should run on most modest machines through a modern browser.

Is Crusty Proto unblocked at school?

It might be, depending on the network. Crusty Proto runs in a browser tab with no install, so there is nothing for a filter to catch as a download. Whether your school or library lets this site through is up to them. It does include zombie violence, although the tone is comic rather than grim.

Does Crusty Proto have jump scares?

Not many. Crusty Proto is built more around the slow pressure of classic survival horror than sudden shocks. Zombies can appear close by and the retro camera can hide things, so a few moments may startle you, but the glitches and awkward animations are far more likely to get a laugh than a scream.

Why does Crusty Proto look glitchy?

Because that is the concept. Crusty Proto pretends to be an unfinished prototype from around 1997, found on a disc at a garage sale, that was trying to copy the hit zombie games of its day. The broken geometry, headless enemies and odd animation are deliberate, turning the game's supposed failure into its sense of humor.
