About Level Zero

Level Zero is a top-down pixel-art Backrooms game about waking up on a damp carpet in a yellow hall, under buzzing lights, with an EXIT sign you are told not to trust. The creator's tagline says it plainly: exits lie.

You explore three areas, the Lobby, the Poolrooms, and Lights Out. Along the way you hide in lockers, track down 29 voice-recorded tapes, and figure out the way back up before you are caught. On the first level the on-screen goal is to find the fuse for the exit, and sanity and battery meters stay on screen while you do it. If you get caught, you replay the level.

You can pick a boy or a girl character, choose Easy or Hard, and switch between English and Spanish. The game has two endings and supports a keyboard or touch controls. You can play Level Zero online for free here, with no download and no account.

How to Play Level Zero

  • Choose a character, a difficulty, and a language on the start screen, then press Start.
  • Move with the arrow keys or W, A, S, and D. On a touch device, use the on-screen controls.
  • Press X to use things, and C for your flashlight.
  • Press V to hide, F to drink, and Space to pause.
  • Find the fuse for the exit, and collect tapes as you explore.
  • Keep an eye on your sanity and battery meters while you move.

What Makes Level Zero Scary

Level Zero builds dread from limits. You only see what your flashlight reaches, a battery meter and a sanity meter sit on screen the whole time, and hiding in a locker is your main answer to danger. That makes stealth matter more than speed, and it turns each corridor into a small decision.

The pixel art keeps the look simple while the dark areas do the rest. Since being caught sends you back to replay the level, careful play pays off. Easy and Hard modes let you choose how much pressure you want, which makes Level Zero friendly to newcomers and a fair test for people who like stealth games.

Tapes give the game a second layer. Hunting for all 29 voice recordings gives you a reason to leave the quiet corners and explore. The three areas, the Lobby, the Poolrooms, and Lights Out, change the setting as you go, so the mood keeps shifting even though the pixel style stays the same.

Tips for Level Zero

  • Start on Easy to learn how hiding and the flashlight work, then move up to Hard.
  • Hide with V when you think something is close, instead of trying to outrun it.
  • Watch the battery and sanity meters so you do not get caught out in the dark.
  • Collect tapes as you go. There are 29 to find across the levels.
  • Check the water counter, and use F to drink when you need it.

FAQ

Is Level Zero free?

Yes. Level Zero is free to play in your browser on this page. You do not need an account, and nothing has to be installed. Pick a character and a difficulty, press Start, and look for the fuse. The creator released it as a free browser game.

How do you play Level Zero?

Move with the arrow keys or W, A, S, and D. X uses things, C is the flashlight, V hides you, F drinks, and Space pauses. Touch controls are also supported. Find the fuse for the exit while avoiding whatever is hunting you in the Backrooms.

Is Level Zero scary?

It is tagged horror and stealth, with a dark, retro pixel-art look. Something hunts you while you explore with a limited flashlight, and you hide in lockers to stay safe. The tension is steady rather than gory. The creator lists no other content warnings.

How many tapes and endings are in Level Zero?

The creator lists 29 voice-recorded tapes to find and two endings. They do not say what the endings are, so the page leaves that to you. The tapes are spread through the Lobby, the Poolrooms, and Lights Out.

Who made Level Zero?

Level Zero was made by Toga777 and released on itch.io. FunClicker did not create it. We embed the creator's own browser build, and the credit link on this page leads to their itch.io profile where you can see their other games.

Can I play Level Zero on a Chromebook or phone?

Yes. The creator lists both keyboard and touch controls, so it works with a keyboard on a Chromebook or laptop, and on a touchscreen with the on-screen buttons. A keyboard gives you quicker access to the flashlight and hide keys.

Is Level Zero unblocked at school?

It needs only a browser tab, with no download, plugin, or login. Whether Level Zero opens on a school or library network depends on that network's filter, which we do not control. If the page loads, you can play.

Does Level Zero have difficulty modes?

Yes. The start screen offers Easy and Hard, and you can also choose a boy or girl character and switch between English and Spanish. If you get caught, you replay the level, so the difficulty setting decides how much pressure that carries.
