About 1-Bit Samurai

1-Bit Samurai is a roguelike runner drawn in nothing but black and white. You slash through enemies as you sprint, and a boss is waiting at the far end of the stage.

The twist is that it has an end. Every run has a finish line, so you're playing toward a fight instead of a high score. Upgrades you pick up along the way change how your samurai moves, which means one attempt rarely looks like the next. You begin with the basics, and the special attack comes later.

A run takes a few minutes, so it slots in between other things easily. You can play 1-Bit Samurai online in this tab with nothing to install, and 1-Bit Samurai free of any account makes it an easy one to try.

How to Play 1-Bit Samurai

  • Tap Space to jump gaps and hazards.
  • Press Z to swing at whatever's in front of you.
  • Press X for the special attack once you've earned it. It stays locked at the start.
  • Grab upgrades as they show up. Each one improves your moveset for the rest of the run.
  • Want different keys? Every control can be rebound from the Controls menu.
  • Keep going to the end and face the last boss.

What to Expect in 1-Bit Samurai

It's fast and it punishes mistakes, so plan on losing a few runs before you see the boss. Runs are short, which means you're back in within seconds, and every loss teaches you something about the timing.

The two-color art helps more than you'd think. Enemies and hazards pop against the background, so your attention goes to timing jumps and slashes. The chiptune music and crunchy sound effects match the retro look. If you like arcade games where one clean run is the whole point, this fits. If you want something relaxed, it'll feel tense.

Tips for 1-Bit Samurai

  • Learn the jump rhythm first. Space does most of the work early on.
  • Go easy on Z. Wait until an enemy is in range, then swing once.
  • Take every upgrade you can find, because the later stretch is much harder without them.
  • Hold the X special attack for a bad moment, like a crowd of enemies or the boss.
  • If the default keys feel awkward, rebind them before your next 1-Bit Samurai run instead of fighting your own hands.

Who Made 1-Bit Samurai

1-Bit Samurai was made by ralh and released on itch.io. It's built in Unity, with the art done in Aseprite and the sound effects made in ChipTone. FunClicker embeds the creator's own version so you can play it here without downloading anything. We did not make the game, and the credit for its design, code, and art belongs to its creator. You can find the original on the 1-Bit Samurai page on itch.io.

FAQ

Is 1-Bit Samurai free?

1-Bit Samurai is free. Press Play above and you're in.

How do you play 1-Bit Samurai?

Space jumps, Z attacks, and X is the special attack once you've earned it. Run, slash what's in your way, collect upgrades and try to reach the final boss. If you'd rather use other keys, the Controls menu lets you rebind every one of them.

What is the goal in 1-Bit Samurai?

Get through the stage alive and beat the boss waiting at the end. 1-Bit Samurai is a roguelike, but it has a finish line instead of running forever, and the upgrades you collect on the way are what get you there.

Who made 1-Bit Samurai?

ralh is the creator of 1-Bit Samurai. We play the original itch.io build here and credit it on this page.

Can I play 1-Bit Samurai on a Chromebook or phone?

The controls are keyboard keys, so a Chromebook or laptop works best. A phone has no Space, Z or X keys, so 1-Bit Samurai is not a good fit for a touch screen unless you attach a keyboard.

Is 1-Bit Samurai unblocked at school?

1-Bit Samurai unblocked depends on your network. It runs in a normal browser tab, so if this page opens, the game should too.

Can I change the controls in 1-Bit Samurai?

Yes. Every control is rebindable in the Controls menu. The defaults are Space to jump, Z to attack and X for the special attack, but you can swap them for whatever suits your hands better.

How long does 1-Bit Samurai take?

A run takes a few minutes, and it has an end point, so you're not playing forever. It's a hard game though, so expect several tries before you get to the boss. Each attempt is short, which keeps it from feeling like a grind.
