About Butterjar

Butterjar is a small puzzle game with a simple goal: get the butterfly into the jar. You cannot touch it directly. Instead you place tiles on the board to close off some paths and tempt it down others, then watch where it flutters.

There are 13 levels, a handful of tile types to build with, and a few kinds of butterfly that behave differently. The idea comes from Trap the Cat, and it was cooked up in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 56. A full playthrough takes ten minutes at most.

It runs on the mouse and a single restart key. You can play Butterjar online in a tab with nothing to install, and Butterjar free is exactly what it sounds like. This puzzle game is quick enough that you'll probably see every level in one sitting.

How to Play Butterjar

  • Left-click to place a tile on the board.
  • Right-click to switch to a different type of tile.
  • Press R to restart the level when you've boxed the butterfly in the wrong way.
  • Watch how the butterfly moves after each tile you drop.
  • Steer it into the jar to clear the level and move on.

What to Expect in Butterjar

It's a gentle puzzle. The pixel-art butterflies keep things soft and calm. The difficulty comes from planning rather than speed: you place a tile, the butterfly responds, and you learn from what it did.

The early levels teach the basics, and later ones mix the tools so you have to choose between blocking a path and luring the butterfly down one. There's no padding. You place a tile and see the result straight away, which makes it a nice fit for a short break.

The pieces are plain: a butterfly, some tiles and a jar. But the order you place things in matters, and that's what makes a second attempt feel rewarding.

Tips for Butterjar

  • Think one move ahead. Every tile you place changes where the butterfly can go next.
  • Try luring tiles as well as blocking ones. You get both kinds of tool.
  • Press R without guilt. Restarting a level costs you almost nothing.
  • Learn how each type of butterfly behaves before you commit a tile.
  • If you enjoy the idea, look up Trap the Cat, the game it borrows from.

Who Made Butterjar

Butterjar was made by Zz1p and released on itch.io. It was made in Unity for Ludum Dare 56, a 48-hour game jam. FunClicker embeds the creator's own version so you can play it here without downloading anything. We did not make the game, and the credit for its design, code, and art belongs to its creator. You can find the original on the Butterjar page on itch.io.
