About Mimic Classic

Mimic Classic is a short puzzle game for PICO-8 built on one odd idea: you mimic animals and take on their form. Each animal changes what you can do, so solving a room is a matter of working out who to copy and when.

There are 11 levels and one flowery secret, and your progress is saved. It's a Sokoban-style puzzle game on a grid, with a retro 8-bit look and a casual feel. A full play takes about an hour. The game is by sourencho, with music by noteheadmusic, and it grew out of a jam prototype.

You can play Mimic Classic online here with nothing to install, and Mimic Classic free means the full game is available, including the save. The controls take a minute to learn, which leaves the thinking to you.

How to Play Mimic Classic

  • Move with the arrow keys.
  • Press X to restart the level if you get stuck.
  • Mimic an animal to take its form and use what it can do.
  • Work out which animal to copy for the room in front of you.
  • Your progress is saved, so you can quit and come back.

What to Expect in Mimic Classic

The fun is in discovery. Every animal has its own abilities, and the puzzles come from asking what happens when you copy this one or that one next to something else. You learn the rules by trying them, and the surprises are the best part.

It's gentle but clever. The grid layout means you plan moves ahead, as in other Sokoban-style games, and the animal forms keep each room from feeling like the last. At 11 levels, it never overstays. There's also one secret to find.

Tips for Mimic Classic

  • Try copying every animal in a room before you commit to a plan.
  • Press X to restart as soon as you box yourself in. It's quick.
  • Ask what each animal can do that your current form cannot.
  • Avoid the P key unless you mean it. It skips levels or deletes your save.
  • Once the 11 levels are done, go hunting for the flowery secret.
