About Star Defenders 3D

Star Defenders 3D is an unfinished first-person arena shooter that runs right in the browser. It's built around two ideas: a voxel world you can destroy, and projectiles whose speed depends on how fast you and the shooter are each moving.

You can play against AI players or, over a peer-to-peer connection, against real people. Press Quick Play and you can be linked up with other players directly. The worlds and most of the colors are generated randomly, so no two arenas look quite the same.

It's closer to a tech demo of its ideas than a finished shooter. You can play Star Defenders 3D online here, and it's Star Defenders 3D free to play. Use Chrome if you can.

How to Play Star Defenders 3D

  • Click Quick Play to get into a match.
  • Move with W, A, S and D.
  • Keys 1 to 6, Space, Ctrl, Esc, Enter and Tab all do something, and the left, right and wheel mouse buttons are in use too, so poke at them in your first match.
  • Fight AI players, or real players in a peer-to-peer match.
  • Shoot the world and watch it break apart.
  • If the mouse does not respond, try Chrome.

What to Expect in Star Defenders 3D

Think prototype. It's unfinished, and it works best in Chrome and other WebKit browsers, though not perfectly. Chrome can occasionally add odd random turns in fullscreen, and the game looks close to unplayable in Firefox.

The interesting part is the physics. Projectile speed depends on relative velocity, so your own motion changes your shots, and the voxel world can be broken apart. It feels more like an experiment in shooter design than a polished arcade release.

Matches with real players depend on who else is connected at the moment, so AI players are the sure way to get a game. Since worlds and colors are random, every arena looks a little different.

Tips for Star Defenders 3D

  • Use Chrome, since the game works best in WebKit browsers.
  • Start with the AI players to learn the keys before joining real people.
  • Try fullscreen carefully, since Chrome can add odd turns there.
  • Test the number keys in your first match to learn what each one does.
  • Keep moving. Your speed affects how fast your shots travel.
