About Sub Dragon

Sub Dragon is an underwater shoot 'em up inspired by Saint Dragon on the Atari ST. It was made in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 35, where the theme was Shapeshift.

The ship is the clever part. It has two sides: a white one that cannot be hurt and stops enemy bullets, and a red one that's heavily armed but very fragile. You slither around the screen, switching shape on the fly, and swing whichever side you need toward the danger to wipe out every opponent.

You can play Sub Dragon online here, and it's Sub Dragon free to play. A gamepad is the recommended way to steer, and a keyboard works too.

How to Play Sub Dragon

  • Move with the arrow keys, or the left stick on a gamepad.
  • Press Space, or A on a gamepad, to freeze your current shape.
  • Keep the white side toward incoming bullets, since it's invulnerable and blocks them.
  • Turn the red side toward enemies, since it carries the heavy weapons.
  • Change your shape as you move to swap between guarding and attacking.
  • Defeat every opponent to clear the area.

What to Expect in Sub Dragon

Sub Dragon turns a standard shooter problem into a shape puzzle. You have a shield and a gun, but they sit at opposite ends of the same body, so you can rarely use both at once. Every turn is a choice between defense and offense.

Moving like a snake gives the controls a distinct feel. You trace curves and loops, and the shape you leave behind matters. The look nods to older arcade shooters, with an underwater setting.

Built in two days, it's focused and short on frills. The Saint Dragon connection is a nice detail for retro fans: it takes that arcade idea underwater and adds its own twist with the shield-and-gun split.

Tips for Sub Dragon

  • Use a gamepad if you have one.
  • Put the white side between you and the bullets, then turn to fire.
  • Do not leave the fragile red side exposed longer than you need to.
  • Freeze your shape when you need to stay put.
  • Learn enemy patterns first, and attack in the gaps.

FAQ

Is Sub Dragon free?

Yes. You can play Sub Dragon in your browser for free, and there's no account to make.

How do you play Sub Dragon?

Move with the arrow keys and press Space to freeze your current shape. On a gamepad, use the left stick to move and the A button to freeze. Use the white side to block bullets and the red side to shoot enemies.

What is the goal in Sub Dragon?

Wipe out every opponent. You steer a snake-like ship with an invulnerable white side that stops bullets and a heavily armed but fragile red side, and you win fights by switching shape to put the right side forward.

Who made Sub Dragon?

Deepnight Games is the creator of Sub Dragon. We play the original itch.io build here and credit it on this page.

What game inspired Sub Dragon?

Saint Dragon on the Atari ST. Sub Dragon was made in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 35, and the jam theme was Shapeshift, which is why your ship changes shape as you move around the screen.

Can I play Sub Dragon on a Chromebook or phone?

The keyboard controls are the arrow keys and Space, so a Chromebook or laptop works, and a gamepad is the recommended option. A phone is not a good choice for a fast shooter that wants a stick or keys.

Is Sub Dragon unblocked at school?

Sub Dragon unblocked works anywhere this page can open. It needs no download, but school networks run their own filters, so we cannot promise it will load.

Does Sub Dragon work with a gamepad?

Yes, and it's the recommended way to play. Use the left stick to move and the A button to freeze your current shape. Without a gamepad, the arrow keys and Space do the same jobs.
