About Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler is a 2D stealth game with one rule at its core: you can only take an enemy down from behind. Every level asks you to clear out all the guards without being spotted, and a guard who sees you and catches up ends your run.

That rule turns each guard into a small puzzle about timing, angle and route. If you're seen, run and hide, then sneak around and look for another way through. Planning pays off more than speed.

You can play Nightcrawler online in a browser tab. A full play takes about half an hour, and it's an early prototype, with art that's meant to be temporary.

How to Play Nightcrawler

  • Click inside the game window first, then use the keyboard to move and sneak through the level.
  • Watch the guards and learn which way each one faces.
  • Come up behind a guard to take them down. That's the only way to kill.
  • If a guard sees you, run away and find somewhere to hide.
  • Look for another route when the main path is watched.
  • Clear every guard in the level without getting spotted.

What to Expect in Nightcrawler

Expect a thinking stealth game, not an action game. You cannot fight your way out of trouble, so every encounter comes down to one question: can you reach this guard unseen?

It's a first prototype, and it plays like one. The art is a stand-in and the look will change later. The pixel graphics are simple, 8-bit and easy to read, which helps when you're planning a route.

If you like the stealth games that inspired it, Gunpoint, Deadbolt and Mark of the Ninja, this is a small taste of that same idea. Nightcrawler free in the browser is worth a half hour if you like patient, careful play.

Tips for Nightcrawler

  • Study a guard's pattern before you move. A few seconds of watching saves a restart.
  • Never walk in front of a guard. Approach from behind or not at all.
  • If you're spotted, break line of sight and hide instead of running in the open.
  • Look for a longer route around a guard. It's often safer than the direct path.
  • Take your time. There's no reward for rushing a stealth level.

Who Made Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler was made by Leo and released on itch.io. It was made in Godot by Leo, with art made in Aseprite and no AI, and it's inspired by Gunpoint, Deadbolt and Mark of the Ninja. FunClicker embeds the creator's own version so you can play it here without downloading anything. We did not make the game, and the credit for its design, code, and art belongs to its creator. You can find the original on the Nightcrawler page on itch.io.

FAQ

Is Nightcrawler free?

Yes. Nightcrawler is free to play here, with nothing to buy and nothing to install.

How do you play Nightcrawler?

Use the keyboard to move and sneak. Click inside the game window first. Watch where each guard faces, approach from behind to take them down, and hide or run if you're spotted. Clear everyone in the level without being seen.

What is the goal of Nightcrawler?

Kill every guard in the level without getting spotted. You can only kill from behind, and a guard who sees you and reaches you ends your run. If you're seen, run away and hide, then find another way around.

Is Nightcrawler finished?

Not yet. It's an early prototype, and there's more that the maker wants to add and experiment with. Most of the art is temporary and will be updated later, so the look and content may keep changing.

Who made Nightcrawler?

That's Leo. Nightcrawler came out on itch.io, and we link back to it from this page.

Can I play Nightcrawler on a Chromebook or phone?

A Chromebook or laptop is the best fit, since the controls are on the keyboard. A phone would be hard to use for a stealth game that needs precise movement and careful timing, so use a computer with a real keyboard if you can.

Is Nightcrawler unblocked at school?

Try it and see. Nightcrawler unblocked loads in the browser with nothing to install, but each school sets its own filters.

What games inspired Nightcrawler?

Nightcrawler takes inspiration from three stealth games: Gunpoint, Deadbolt and Mark of the Ninja. It keeps to simple rules, with one big one: you can only kill from behind, so patience and planning matter more than reflexes.
